Home School Persecution

Three Years Ago Today

Exactly three years ago the weather was much like today, but perhaps a little colder.  Our family was happy, peaceful and expectant.  We were planning to have some friends over for the evening and the day was spent with home school and preparing for the evening.  My wife spent the afternoon in the kitchen preparing gumbo (cajun style), pies and bread, along with the other foods for the meal.

The guest were to arrive at 5 PM.  At about 4:30 PM the doorbell rang.  We supposed it was the guests, but no, it was the beginning of the nightmare which has now lasted three years.

Today I would like to share with you what happened.  From the pen of Attorney Joe Churchwell who came came to our defense a few months later, we have an open letter to the Legislature and the Governor.  His Open Letter is a little long, so be patient, and if necessary, read it in several parts.  If you want to understand what is happening to the Stanleys, here is the beginning,  and a lot of the essentials.  Bro Hal

Open Letter to Members of the Legislature and

Governor Asa Hutchinson

On the evening of January 12th, 2015 the Stanley family’s lives would be instantly and drastically changed forever. Based upon extreme and fantastic allegations of abuse and neglect (including intentional poisoning) a doctor equipped with diagnostics had accompanied the State Police, Garland County Sheriff’s Dept., DHS, Garland County Coroner, and a SWAT team to the Stanley’s home to examine the Stanley children for signs of neglect or abuse. This was the first doctor to have ever touched the Stanley children. They had never stepped foot in a doctor’s office or hospital in their lives, yet he concluded that they were all healthy and lacked nothing in the way of medical care. Moreover, there was absolutely no evidence of neglect or abuse.

Despite this the children were removed from their home and separated from their parents by the Garland County Sheriff’s Department. A Dependent Neglect case was opened, “services” ordered, hoops and hurdles and obstacles were placed between the parents and children. After being forcefully removed from their home and separated from their parents, the children were interrogated, showered, deloused, intrusively inspected, and placed in a strange place by strange people with no idea why or for how long. This was the very first night of many of these young children’s lives that they were not to be placed in their own beds by their parents after giving thanks for the blessings bestowed upon them by their Creator. The State held these children as captive as criminals while the parents jumped through the hoops, over the hurdles, and navigated the unnecessary and belittling obstacles placed before them (although these parents had at that time home-birthed, home schooled, and provided for nine children single-handedly, they were ordered to attend parenting classes among other “services”).

In time, the parents were allowed occasional, brief periods of supervised visitation with the children. After a few months the four youngest were returned home, and within approximately 6 months all of the Stanley children were to the parents that had burned, beaten, poisoned, and neglected them (according to the findings of Kathy Finnegan of the Arkansas State Police), but not before they were enrolled in public schools and indoctrinated by the State. During this time the children were forced into a way of life and a philosophy that was contrary to this family’s values and principles. In short, their innocence was lost and their way of life discredited while the Authorities showed them that there was no security in family and that they and their parents worthless and powerless.

Ms. Finnegan substantiated the abuse and neglect finding 21 offenses of neglect or abuse against Hal and Michelle Stanley. 12 for educational neglect, 1 for bruising, 6 for poisoning, 1 for burning, and 1 for striking a child in the face or head; none of which are legitimate or supported by the evidence. To elaborate:

If the Arkansas State Police (ASP) Crimes Against Children Division (CACD) had followed protocol (in other words, obeyed the law they are sworn to uphold) none of these findings could have been supported by the evidence; not even when one takes the report prepared by the investigator as factual, credible, and reads it in the light most favorable to the state, or in a light least favorable to the Stanleys.

In my experience I have come to believe that there are two ways that erroneous true findings of abuse and neglect are produced by a child maltreatment investigator. They are either produced intentionally or incompetently. Intentionally produced true findings are a vehicle for punishment if the accused is perceived as being uncooperative, non forthcoming, defiant or rude. In Hal and Michelle Stanley’s case, Finnegan implies in her Administrative Summary that she had no choice but to make true findings, as a result of the Stanley’s refusal to submit to her interrogation. The truth is, nobody refused, and the Stanleys testified at great length under both direct and cross examination during the dependent neglect probable cause hearing, wherein the State was given an unlinited opportunity to question the Stanleys, and both were perfectly candid and forthcoming in their testimony.

A colleague of mine, James Murray, calls this sort of behavior “Contempt of Cop”.

The erroneous true findings of abuse and neglect that are produced by incompetence are easy enough to identify. There is a clear and concise manual (Publication 357) that defines the offenses of abuse and neglect contained within the Child Maltreatment Act. It does so for each offense separately and in great detail, and then it lists the elements of the offense; or the the required evidence and acts or omissions of the parent/guardian or unrelated offender that must be present for an investigator to make a true finding. PUB-357 was promulgated long ago by DHS and is quite easy to follow and understand; provided that one can read and comprehend at a 3rd or 4th grade level. Because Investigators are required to have a baccalaureate degree, one may logically deduce that the protocol is either being ignored intentionally or the training and supervision within these agencies is grossly inadequate. The regulations and agreement between DHS and the ASP mandates that ASP investigators follow the same protocol as the DHS investigators.

Kathy Finnegan of the ASP testified before the Joint Performance Review Committee on July 30th, 2015, that she follows PUB-357’s guidelines in every case when determining if an allegation is true or false. Her commander, Major Ron Stayton was also present and testified that Finnegan’s supervisor, Michelle Gatlin and he were both involved with, and approved the true findings in the Stanley case.

There are only three possible explanations for Maj. Stayton and Ms. Finnegan’s testimony regarding the use of PUB-357 in substantiating the Stanley investigation.

  1. Major Stayton and Ms. Finnegan perjured themselves before the Joint Performance Review Committee;
  2. Major Stayton and Ms. Finnegan are unable to read and comprehend the information contained within in an investigative file and apply those facts to very simple and clear elements contained within PUB-357; or
  3. Major Stayton and Ms. Finnegan used a completely different Stanley family investigative file than was provided to their counsel by the Central Registry.

All players involved in Child Welfare, especially the investigators, know that a true finding (even if successfully appealed and overturned) can be disastrous to a family. The statewide average in Arkansas for true findings of abuse and neglect that were overturned on appeal in fiscal year 2015 is 45%. In Area 9, (Ms. Finnegan’s Area) 70% of true findings that were appealed during that same period were overturned.

During the afore-mentioned JPRC hearing Sen. Alan Clark asked Maj. Stayton, what his thoughts were about the fact that nearly one-half all of appealed true findings during the fiscal year 2015 were overturned on appeal. His initial response a 45% reversal of true findings appealed was that the “system is working”. For whom the system is working he did not say.  A follow up response was that he did not feel that all of those reversed cases were decided correctly by the Administrative Law Judges. Both statements were direct and bold and made with no remorse or concern whatsoever for the enormous costs to those 45% falsely convicted of abuse and or neglect. I have yet to hear one person within DHS or ASP admit that when a parent, guardian, or other provider suffers harm as a result of an erroneous true finding, this damage and harm is also injuring those very children that the agency congratulates themselves for “protecting”.

A true finding on a provider also injures children that are not even the subject of the abuse or neglect (whether actual or not). Relationships between siblings and 1/2 siblings suffer when custody is changed or visitation is suspended.

The monetary costs can run into tens of thousands of dollars before you can blink an eye. There are court costs and attorney’s fees, loss of time at work to jump through the Agencies’ hoops. It costs time and money to attend hearings, and to exercise supervised visitation under the suspicious eye of the Department. The accused parent must be “in compliance” with Agency plans and participate in what are often unnecessary “services” such as counseling, psych evals, anger management, parenting classes etc. Add to that the enormous emotional toll from the stress, diminished relationships with children, and tarnished reputation to name only a few repercussions. Any person with a job or career that requires licensure, works near children, impaired adults, or any state employee is practically guaranteed to loose his or her livelihood. Children do without when providers lose jobs, whether the children are in that provider’s custody or their custodian’s child support ceases as a result of losing his or her job. If the provider isn’t terminated, Christmases, birthdays, camps, vacations, recreation and other non essentials often disappear as the families’ discretionary income disappears, and their quality of life dissipates. I have been speaking of working middle class America. The poor and unsophisticated have absolutely no chance at all, and the working middle class can be bankrupted and dismantled by a spiteful ex-spouse, or any other person or entity with an axe to grind, by a single phone call to the State Police Child Abuse Hotline.

This is all true even when children are not taken away from their families of origin by force, and subsequently isolated from their extended families. I cannot even begin to comprehend the trauma that victims of removal and isolation must experience. The children that are are victims of neglect or abuse at home are doubly victimized by the very intervention meant to protect them. Often times the intervention is more damaging than the abuse or neglect.

The damage is swift, sure and quickly becomes permanent.

Now this next bit of information you may not believe: the investigative protocol of the Agencies allow a single investigator to gather evidence, interview witnesses, judge the witnesses’ credibility, decide relevance of and weigh the remaining evidence and then ultimately decide innocence or guilt.  The child abuse investigator is the the detective, prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner. The investigator is given absolute power, and well….. you know the rest.

When true findings are made in anger or retribution (contempt of cop) the actions of the agency are corrupt and criminal in nature.  Even the most disciplined and principled investigator that genuinely does his or her dead level best to make a reasoned, objective determination, cannot possibly do so consistently. Human nature and the responsibility of a single person performing all of the functions mentioned above, precludes objectivity when working within the confines of an entirely subjective process.

Now please consider this: All of these government employees operate within a completely secret administration, in closed proceedings, with sealed files and have no checks or balances other than legislative oversight. Can you name the members, or ex-officio panel members or even the committee or subcommittee that these agencies answer to?

Whether erroneous true findings by investigators are made intentionally or incompetently is immaterial, as either is absolutely unacceptable when the stakes are as high as the loss of the fundamental family unit and its right to exist free from governmental intrusion. But alas, and notwithstanding how the erroneous true findings against the Stanley’s materialized, the corruption extends beyond the investigative outcome. ASP and DHS authorities are painfully aware that the true findings are inappropriate in the Stanley case and are not supported by the evidence. STILL the powers that be refuse to admit this, and are forcing the Stanleys to appeal the findings.

I personally believe that the Garland County Sheriff’s Dept. and the State Police CACD are primarily responsible for the Stanley tragedy, however, DHS is responsible for providing legal representation on behalf of the ASP at the administrative appeal hearing October 9th. DHS can and should refuse to defend these baseless findings, and force the ASP to evaluate the personnel and protocol and begin meaningful reform. They have thus far refused to do so, therefore, DHS is aiding and abetting, and is as culpable as the ASP.

Hal Stanley, Alex White, Dr. Claire Kelly, Kanoe Fendley and Bridgette Brantley have agreed to share with the JPRC on Oct. 1st, at 1:00 p.m., their experiences as victims of false reports, erroneous true findings, and being subjects of a child maltreatment investigation. Dr. William R. Viser will discuss the trauma caused by the primary intervention of removing children from their homes and isolating them from their families.

I honestly cannot recall the number of men and women involved with DHS and ASP that I have consulted with and or represented in my career. I do however recall the word most often used to describe their feelings, and that word is terrified.  No word better describes the tactics of an entity that’s primary intervention is to enter one’s home, remove one’s children, and place them in an undisclosed location with unidentified adults and children for as long as it wishes. Combine that with the authority place those children up for adoption should it choose to do so, while acting in complete secrecy, and at times, initiating this action on an anonymous phone call based upon mere suspicion, and terrorism is no longer an adequate descriptor.

Please join us on October 1st and help us reestablish the rights of the American Family.

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the
Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And
I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
(Mat 16:13-19)

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power (exousia, authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
(Mat 28:18-20)

Dear reader, if you humble yourself to these two passages of Holy Scripture, you will go a long way toward understanding the New Testament. Jesus is God manifested in the flesh. He speaks in no uncertain terms. He has all authority. He has a purpose. Our purpose is to do what He has authorized, with the deep assurance that Christ Jesus will accomplish His eternal purpose in building His Church!

Home Church(Family Worship)

A family is a father, a mother and a child or children, ideally, from a biblical perspective. Worship is to honor the “worth” of God, or “worthship” if I may. Family worship is a family expressing the worth of God in the conscience of the family. God, of course is the Triune God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Christian worship is then giving the proper honor to our God in everything wherein He is God! He is Lord of all, so every aspect of life should be to His honor.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God”, (1Co 10:31). There are many ways we can glorify God, but here Paul begins with the most basic acts of eating and drinking. Where does most of this ideally take place? In the family. Have you thought of the holiness of a meal? We have spent may hours in holy fellowship with brethren around the table. Perhaps you have never thought of fellowship around a table full of delicious food as glorifying God, but that is the standard Paul sets in this verse.
In our day we speak of the “house of worship” or the church building where we go to worship. We can worship almost any where. In the New Testament, and for centuries after Christ returned to the right hand of the Father, believers met in their homes normally to worship God in an assembly. Consider:
And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. (Act 5:42)
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, (Act 2:46)
And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in thy house: (Phm 1:2)

Where was the church? It was in Philemon’s house.

Note the simplicity here. When? Daily. Where? Every house. Why? To teach and preach Jesus Christ. You don’t need an organized clergy for this. You don’t need men with letters after their names to direct this. You don’t need the government to regulate it. It doesn’t take any extra money to make it work! Anyone who knows that he is a sinner, that Christ is the only Saviour, and that He can trust his whole being for time and eternity to God, knows enough to teach and preach Jesus Christ. Simply teaching is to present the facts and preaching is the exhortation or encouragement to live the facts. Family worship is simple.

For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward,” (2Co 1:12).

With some 450,000 churches in our country today, few people realize that there were no church buildings as we know them for centuries after Pentecost. Further, you will see in history, that shortly after the emphasis was shifted to buildings, and organized religion, the world went into what we call the Dark Ages for about a thousand years or until the Great Reformation. Throughout the Dark Ages, God had a witness, usually in small home assemblies who were usually persecuted by the organized religion which was called by the world, Christianity. This is dark, but there are many good, well documented history books showing the horrors of organized christianity which had little or nothing to do with our precious Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now consider with me, what is the most basic realityof a family, something even more basic that eating and drinking? Marriage! “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge,” (Heb 13:4). The purpose of marriage is to honor or glorify God. The heart of the family is the marriage which produced it. In our culture, sadly, marriages are usually based on attraction. That attraction might be sex, tradition, ambition or even religion. The attraction should be the wonderful purpose of Christ, and His glory.  Oh, how it would change things if, for instance, when a young lady was considering marriage, she would think first to ask ,

  1. Would this young man be faithful in leading our young family in the worship or honor of God?
  2. Would he be able to lead in family devotions?
  3. Would he be able to pray in a crisis?
  4. Would he be able to trust God in all things financial?
  5. Would he shape our lives daily to honor my precious Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ?
The young man would ask,
  1. Would this young lady be an example for our children?
  2. Would she be able to follow me as I lead the family in serving God?”
  3. Would she pattern her life after Ephesians 5 and 1 Peter 3 and other scriptures?
  4. Would she be a woman of prayer?
  5. Would she be able to help in the ministry God has given us?

You see, the family is something like this: God has a purpose and he saves a young man to carry out that mission. He then gives him the darling of his heart to help him carry out His commission. “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him,”(Gen 2:18). Adam needed someone to help him tend the garden of Eden! Further, the father and mother need help, so children are given to help in completing the wonderful plan God has for the family. This is the ideal, and grace is given to recover from the failures of meeting the ideal.

Since the family is the heart of God’s purpose in the life of the mother and father, it is safe to say that Christ Jesus can provide everthing needed in the family by His infinite grace. He will provide every thing needed for Family Learning, Family Health, Family Birth, Family Business, and Family Defense. This ministry is devoted to showing how Family Worship is the bedrock or foundation for everything the family needs.  Brother Hal Stanley

Dealing With The Talebearer

Dealing With The Talebearer

“Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people … Thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.” — Lev_19:16, Lev_19:17

Tale-bearing emits a threefold poison; for it injures the teller, the hearer, and the person concerning whom the tale is told. Whether the report be true or false, we are by this precept of God’s Word forbidden to spread it. The reputations of the Lord’s people should be very precious in our sight, and we should count it shame to help the devil to dishonour the Church and the name of the Lord. Some tongues need a bridle rather than a spur. Many glory in pulling down their brethren, as if thereby they raised themselves. Noah’s wise sons cast a mantle over their father, and he who exposed him earned a fearful curse. We may ourselves one of these dark days need forbearance and silence from our brethren, let us render it cheerfully to those who require it now. Be this our family rule, and our personal bond-SPEAK EVIL OF NO MAN.
The Holy Spirit, however, permits us to censure sin, and prescribes the way in which we are to do it. It must be done by rebuking our brother to his face, not by railing behind his back. This course is manly, brotherly, Christlike, and under God’s blessing will be useful. Does the flesh shrink from it? Then we must lay the greater stress upon our conscience, and keep ourselves to the work, lest by suffering sin upon our friend we become ourselves partakers of it. Hundreds have been saved from gross sins by the timely, wise, affectionate warnings of faithful ministers and brethren. Our Lord Jesus has set us a gracious example of how to deal with erring friends in his warning given to Peter, the prayer with which he preceded it, and the gentle way in which he bore with Peter’s boastful denial that he needed such a caution.  C.H. Spurgeon

Walking In Truth

“For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.” — 3Jn_1:3

The truth was in Gaius, and Gaius walked in the truth. If the first had not been the case, the second could never have occurred; and if the second could not be said of him the first would have been a mere pretence. Truth must enter into the soul, penetrate and saturate it, or else it is of no value. Doctrines held as a matter of creed are like bread in the hand, which ministers no nourishment to the frame; but doctrine accepted by the heart, is as food digested, which, by assimilation, sustains and builds up the body. In us truth must be a living force, an active energy, an indwelling reality, a part of the woof and warp of our being. If it be in us, we cannot henceforth part with it. A man may lose his garments or his limbs, but his inward parts are vital, and cannot be torn away without absolute loss of life. A Christian can die, but he cannot deny the truth. Now it is a rule of nature that the inward affects the outward, as light shines from the centre of the lantern through the glass: when, therefore, the truth is kindled within, its brightness soon beams forth in the outward life and conversation. It is said that the food of certain worms colours the cocoons of silk which they spin: and just so the nutriment upon which a man’s inward nature lives gives a tinge to every word and deed proceeding from him. To walk in the truth, imports a life of integrity, holiness, faithfulness, and simplicity-the natural product of those principles of truth which the gospel teaches, and which the Spirit of God enables us to receive. We may judge of the secrets of the soul by their manifestation in the man’s conversation. Be it ours to-day, O gracious Spirit, to be ruled and governed by thy divine authority, so that nothing false or sinful may reign in our hearts, lest it extend its malignant influence to our daily walk among men.

  • Underneath are the everlasting arms.” — Deu_33:27
  • God-the eternal God-is himself our support at all times, and especially when we are sinking in deep trouble. There are seasons when the Christian sinks very low in humiliation. Under a deep sense of his great sinfulness, he is humbled before God till he scarcely knows how to pray, because he appears, in his own sight, so worthless. Well, child of God, remember that when thou art at thy worst and lowest, yet “underneath” thee “are everlasting arms.” Sin may drag thee ever so low, but Christ’s great atonement is still under all. You may have descended into the deeps, but you cannot have fallen so low as “the uttermost”; and to the uttermost he saves. Again, the Christian sometimes sinks very deeply in sore trial from without. Every earthly prop is cut away. What then? Still underneath him are “the everlasting arms.” He cannot fall so deep in distress and affliction but what the covenant grace of an ever-faithful God will still encircle him. The Christian may be sinking under trouble from within through fierce conflict, but even then he cannot be brought so low as to be beyond the reach of the “everlasting arms”-they are underneath him; and, while thus sustained, all Satan’s efforts to harm him avail nothing.
This assurance of support is a comfort to any weary but earnest worker in the service of God. It implies a promise of strength for each day, grace for each need, and power for each duty. And, further, when death comes, the promise shall still hold good. When we stand in the midst of Jordan, we shall be able to say with David, “I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.” We shall descend into the grave, but we shall go no lower, for the eternal arms prevent our further fall. All through life, and at its close, we shall be upheld by the “everlasting arms”-arms that neither flag nor lose their strength, for “the everlasting God fainteth not, neither is weary.”  C.H. Spurgeon

“Will ye also go away?” — Joh_6:67

Many have forsaken Christ, and have walked no more with him; but what reason have YOU to make a change? Has there been any reason for it in the past? Has not Jesus proved himself all-sufficient? He appeals to you this morning-“Have I been a wilderness unto you?” When your soul has simply trusted Jesus, have you ever been confounded? Have you not up till now found your Lord to be a compassionate and generous friend to you, and has not simple faith in him given you all the peace your spirit could desire? Can you so much as dream of a better friend than he has been to you? Then change not the old and tried for new and false. As for the present, can that compel you to leave Christ? When we are hard beset with this world, or with the severer trials within the Church, we find it a most blessed thing to pillow our head upon the bosom of our Saviour. This is the joy we have to-day that we are saved in him; and if this joy be satisfying, wherefore should we think of changing? Who barters gold for dross? We will not forswear the sun till we find a better light, nor leave our Lord until a brighter lover shall appear; and, since this can never be, we will hold him with a grasp immortal, and bind his name as a seal upon our arm. As for the future, can you suggest anything which can arise that shall render it necessary for you to mutiny, or desert the old flag to serve under another captain? We think not. If life be long-he changes not. If we are poor, what better than to have Christ who can make us rich? When we are sick, what more do we want than Jesus to make our bed in our sickness? When we die, is it not written that “neither death, nor life, nor things present, nor things to come, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!” We say with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”

Should All Homeschooled Children be Required to Report to “Child Protection Services” to Check for Abuse?

Homeschooling mother teaching kids private lessons in geography
by Richard Wexler [1]
The Chronicle of Social Change [1]

Marie Cohen’s latest column [2] in The Chronicle calls for requiring that every parent who homeschools a child bring that child before a mandated reporter of child abuse for periodic inspection.

As with every other well-intentioned proposal to intrude on families, the problem with this one is the harm it would do to children in 32 states. (In 18 states everyone is a mandated reporter, including every parent, so, presumably, the proposal would have no effect at all.)

But in those 32 states, consider the real-world impact of requiring parents to submit their children to inspection by a mandated reporter, in this case probably a public school teacher:

The teacher knows that this child is being brought before him or her specifically to be checked to see if the child is being abused or neglected – that creates an inherent bias toward finding such maltreatment.
To the extent that the mandated reporter has been trained at all, it often involves broad, vague lists of “symptoms” or “warning signs.” One website alone [3] lists 77 different “signs” that could be child abuse. They also could have many other causes. At least one of these “signs” probably could be found in almost any child at some point in that child’s life.
The mandated reporter knows that if s/he fails to report and then it turns out the child really was abused s/he could face dismissal and perhaps even criminal penalties. There is no penalty for a false report made in good faith.
Children will know the purpose of these visits, and they will sense the tension they cause in their families. That makes them, inherently, an act of emotional abuse against the children. As three of the leading child welfare scholars of the 20th century, Anna Freud, Joseph Goldstein and Albert J. Solnit wrote, in calling for far higher standards before ever intervening in families:
Children react even to temporary infringement of parental autonomy with anxiety, diminishing trust, loosening of emotional ties, or an increasing tendency to be out of control.

Why Single Out Homeschoolers?
The singling out of homeschoolers is odd for other reasons as well.

The children most at risk of abuse or neglect are the youngest. So the same logic behind this proposal requires that every child from birth to at least kindergarten age also be presented for periodic inspection.

Cohen even is selective in the lessons she chooses to draw from horror stories [4]; and once again [5], horror stories are Cohen’s entire argument. In the two Iowa cases she cites, the children were homeschooled. They also were adopted from foster care. In one case, relatives desperate to take in the child were turned down. Yet Cohen offers no sweeping conclusions about regulating foster care or adoption.

Years ago, in a church I pastored, we had a young man who had lost his wife, but he had three small children.  He would arrive at the assemble with a Bible and pampers under one arm and a baby on the other, with the other two children scampering around to lovingly help their dad .  We joyfully watched him lovingly care for those young children, and never miss a service or opportunity to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ.  The church was delighted to help him while he was with us, and we all knew that it was with sacrifice that he could keep his family together.  Few of us have thought much about the single father.  We all know much of single mothers struggling to keep their families together and that is a major problem in our society.  My life is devoted to help all such mothers.  My purpose here is to point out that there are many wonderful, sacrificial single fathers sacrificing for their children.  I want to help them.  In another experience we had a single father family visit us.  The mother had gone to the hospital  with what she thought was a minor problem, and through medical neglect, a few hours later she was dead leaving a husband and four or five small children.  It was a blessing to see how well the father and children were adapting, but the sacrifice was obvious.  They had good extended family members and an amazing little ten year old girl who was acting as “mother”.  It was inspirational to see how well they were functioning, but it was very obvious that they had many needs.  I want to help single fathers!

A Ministry for Single Fathers

Recently I discovered a six year old ministry for single men, and I’d like to share it with you.  It is called Thee Brother’s Keeper.  It is directed by Mr. George Griepp.  I will quote from his brochure:

Thee Brother’s Keeper is a non-profit agency dedicated to addressing the needs of single father participants and their children.

Single father veterans, we are here to help you! Please call us so we can connect you with services we provide and with our partner agencies to further assist you.

Single father participants in crisis face many obstacles. They encounter barriers to employment, financial challenges, legal obligations, family issues, and housing dilemmas.

Thee Brother’s Keeper assists through nutrition education, vocational guidance, peer counseling, budgeting services, and technology training to allow single father participants to become independent single father families in the community.

There is a shortage of quality programs providing services for this single father family demographic. This places a heavy burden on these programs and creates a repetitive dependency that is hard to break.

Provision of transportation, housing, childcare, clothing, legal, organizational, budgeting, and nutrition assistance will allow single father participants to improve their quality of life and enable them to raise their children as successful single father participants and insure their children’s futures.
